Maker/Designer/Artist
Wood/Glass

As a maker of fine furniture for the past twenty-five years, I have shown and sold my work in many California galleries and participated in juried international fine craft shows through the American Craft Council. For the last fifteen years most of my work has been commissioned by private clients.

As a glass artist, since finishing classes at Public Glass in San Francisco in 2001, I have been blowing glass one day a week at Chaos Glass Works in Sutter Creek.

"Although wood and glass are very different materials, working with them involves the craftsmanship of risk in that the quality of the result is continually at risk during the process of making. I am able to learn from each process and apply that knowledge to my work in the other material. Wood allows for precise planning and the making of jigs that allow you to manipulate the material as you desire, whereas glass is an ancient art, using tools and techniques that have changed little in two thousand years. The precision of working in wood may appear in the lines of a classically shaped vase, while the fluidity of glass may be revealed in the live edge of a table top. Wood is my first love, but working with glass is a great change of pace. My wood designs may consume months, while a blown glass vase or bowl must be completed once the process is started. For me there is nothing to compare with the realization of a piece of furniture from the original drawings to the asssembly of parts to the final rub of the finish. To see the piece out of my studio for the first time in a gallery or a client's home is indeed both fulfilling and exciting."
